Adventures in Home Decor

So I guess with a new addition to the family, some changes to the family abode must be made. With everything under the stars (and more) available to choose from...how do you choose? To be honest, I don't know how I chose. Actually, yes I do know...Mark vetoed my first choice in colours.
Anyway, so with the colours chosen, how do you pick everything else? Bedding, furniture, all important accessories... there are so many possibilities!! It's not like the kid is going to care though right? They won't even have a clue. It's all about the parents.
I decided against my original plan for a child's room...mainly due to the time it would require to get it done and also, I want the child to be old enough to appreciate the coolness of their room.
Now here we are with plan 2...not so much of a plan, but what we ended up with. Funny how you can have one thing in mind and then end up with something completely different. We always said we'd go with dark wood for the furniture (we have white), and I didn't want a totally girly room (there is no way Mark would ever let a boy live in this room).
So without further ado, I present the Smith's Extreme Home Makeover (sorry no before pictures! But it's easy to imagine - grey walls).
Enjoy.

Thanks Mark and Dad for painting the walls, and a huge THANK YOU! to my Mom for helping me paint all of the polka dots and all of the sewing for the cribbing.
Anyone have any ideas on cool room decor that is not Disney or cartoon characters?

I LOVE the pink and green combo- very nice paint job. And you are right- the room is totally for you- not the baby. they don't care! I want close-ups of the home made crib set, though! With the polka dots, I don't hink you will need a lot of decor- it is self-decorating. Maybe just some white picture frames with some cool pictures in them? Can't wait to see you tomorrow!

Wow Melanie, I LOVE the polka dots ... have any boy ideas? I need to start decorating my boys' room!

I agree with Krista. Keep the rest of the room basic. Thick white frames against the green would be awesome. Bold... and so fun! What color is the carpet?

This is soooo cute! Do you have any good ideas for a little boys room? By the way, to answer your question about the house...we will be living in Maple Grove so we will definitely be close enough to meet up often!

That is pretty much the cutest non-idea I've ever seen. See you soon!

You should go to Marthastewart.com and look of tissue paper pom-poms. You could make some pink and green ones and hang them from the ceiling. They are really cute, Kelli Granum had them at her baby shower, so you could also look at her blog.

Is this really her room? Did you really do this? Um...WOW. At first glance I thought this was a pic from a mag of what you were thinking of doing her room. I love it.
I agree with the white frame thing. And maybe even do black and white pics - baby pics? You can also pick up a few of those square mirrors from IKEA - I did that in Luc's room and painted them to match his room.
This looks incredible though. Bravisimo!

I love this room. Your mom must be so talented (then again- so are YOU!) Boo to Disney and Cartoon- the polka dots are way more my style. Baby Smith is going to LOVE this room :)

that's fierce. once we get a 2nd bedroom for Beckett and those future gleams in our eyes (in thought, not in utero) I'm totally dropping polka dots all over the place.
